Exploring the Creative World: Lex Brown

I am a world builder, a cultural curator, and a connector of people and ideas. My creative pursuits are anchored by curiosity- as I’ve sharpened my sword of creativity on the stone of visual arts and the continuity underpinned by my business acumen. Most recently, this has come to life through 3-D modeling, film, and stone carving and has been upheld by the partnerships, projects, and communities I occupy and contribute to.

The next iteration of my artistic self that lies ahead is centered, recursive, and prolific. I am leaning more into writing and storytelling, telling my story, and being a conduit for others who resonate. I love where ideas connect and intersect- this will be a recurring motif in my upcoming works. As of late, my areas of interest lie heavily in my draw to cartography, science, and the unknown.

I am a founding member of BRKBRD Collective, a visual creator, and a community builder. This year, I have been filming a piece in Southern California, a marine science project in Indonesia, and the orchestration of a self-directed study at the intersection of science, storytelling, and art.

Teachings From the Field:

1. The Power of the Pivot

When you put yourself out there, you are going to get a lot of rejection. Having a solid sense of self and purpose will alleviate the pain of rejection. Also, allow space for knowing that a “no” from one person or opportunity will lead to a “yes” from the one that is right for you. Be open to change and develop the skill of emotional regulation.

2. The Importance of Solitude in the Creative Process

Be able to sit with yourself. Go on walks by yourself, go to social engagements by yourself. Challenge yourself to be self-reliant socially and allow time to reflect. Breakthroughs come from these moments with yourself.

3. A Grain of Salt Rule

What works for me may not work for you. Everyone has different experiences and receives different reactions. Tailor advice to your own needs. You can’t be given a formula for success or happiness, although you can take bits and pieces from other people's experiences and your own and build your path. The best rule of thumb is to experience. Put yourself out there and try different things to learn who you are and what works for you. This will also help develop confidence.
